Call for Papers
Deadline for Submissions: May 5, 2009
The 4th Annual National Summit of Mining Communities is scheduled for October 13-15, 2009, in
Butte, Montana. The Summit was created in 2006 in recognition of the diverse environmental and
economic effects that mining communities experience as a result of the boom and bust cycles of
mining. The Summit began in Leadville, Colorado, as a grassroots gathering of people from mining
towns with emphasis on “communities talking to communities.” The format allows attendees to share
information and learn about how other communities have overcome mining-related challenges and
how they have moved forward with their own community planning process.
Butte will host the 2009 Summit, which will focus on the benefits and negative consequences of
mining to communities. As a result, we are requesting submissions for both panel and individual
presentations, as well as booths or posters concerning active and/or historic mining, cleanup and
restoration of mine sites, historic preservation, laws and regulations, recreational tourism, community
and economic redevelopment, and other relevant topics. We welcome students and professionals who
want to highlight research, share educational or regulatory information, or distribute marketing
materials. There should be time for comments and questions built in to each presentation. The
presentations can explore current issues and challenges and also past successes and failures.
The conference format will be a series of presenters and panels discussing mining-related issues.
Social and cultural events throughout the duration of the Summit will provide a balance between the
presentations and workshops and will also offer plenty of time to network.
If you are interested in presenting a topic, please provide a brief, one-page abstract of your topic, your
principle means of presenting (booth, presentation, poster), and the equipment you will need. Please
state the length and format of your topic. If you are proposing a panel or individual presentation,
please let us know what, if any, opportunities will be available for audience participation.
In addition to describing your proposed topic, please let us know what other topics you are interested
in learning more about so we can make the best possible selections for the Summit.
Please submit all requests to:
