National Summit of Mining Communities
The 3rd Annual National Summit of Mining Communities is scheduled for September 7-11, 2008, in Butte and Anaconda, Montana. The Summit was created in 2006 in recognition of the diverse environmental and economic effects that mining communities experience as a result of the boom and bust cycles of mining. BUTTE
| The Summit began in Leadville, Colorado, as a grassroots gathering of people from mining towns with emphasis on "communities talking to communities." The format allows attendees to share information and learn about how other communities have overcome mining-related challenges and how they have moved forward with their own community planning process.
ANACONDA
 | Butte and Anaconda will co-host the 2008 Summit, which will focus on the benefits and negative consequences of mining to communities. As a result, we are requesting submissions for both panel and individual presentations, as well as booths or posters concerning active and/or historic mining, cleanup and restoration of mine sites, historic preservation, laws and regulations, recreational tourism, community and economic redevelopment, and other relevant topics.
The conference format will be a series of presenters and panels in three different tracks: the local/state track, the regional track, and the national/international track. Social and cultural events throughout the Summit will provide a balance between the presentations and workshops and will also offer plenty of time to network.
