8:30 am The Future Beyond Chance– David Beurle and Juliet Fox; Innovative Leadership This engaging keynote session will explore the unique challenges facing natural resource based communities, and how such communities from around the world are proactively building a sustainable future in the face of a volatile and uncertain economic environment.

10:15 a.m. The Futures Game – a Powerful Simulation Learning Tool
This highly interactive session will feature The Futures Game. This simulation learning tool is designed to explore how regional and local decisions can shape long–term economic, environmental, and community well–being. As you work in teams, this participatory game will provide an enjoyable and accessible way to engage in robust discussions about contemporary challenges of community and economic development. This tool provides real benefit to critical thinking about the future, and will challenge even the most experienced leaders and decision makers.

1:30 p.m. Getting Down to the 'Nitty-Gritty'— Practical Workshop Sessions
The afternoon program will include parallel streams that will showcase research and practical projects and examples from across the region as communities wrestle with the challenge of building long term, sustainable futures.

Case Study— Winnemucca Futures Project
This case study will review a long term community and economic planning project currently underway in Winnemucca, NV. This project has used scenario planning to define a range of critical drivers shaping the future of this mining community and has defined a series of plausible futures before the region. Importantly, this project includes a large grass-roots community process to build community ownership and dialogue about the local community and economic development plan.

This case study provides the basis for the specialist tracks that follow.
2:30 p.m.Parallel Workshop Tracks — Each workshop track will focus on answering a critical over-arching question. The format will consist of a series of short (15-20 minutes) expert presentations followed by a workshop panel discussion to explore key lessons from presentations.

Expert presentations will cover topics such as:
—Tools and approaches to identify economic opportunities
—Case studies of economic diversification
—Resources to assist economic development and diversification
Expert presentations will cover topics such as: —Attributes of successful mining communities —Building community sustainability and a 'can–do' culture —Engaging community participation in dialogue about the future
4:30 p.m.Light Bulbs and Epiphanies— Conference Plenary Session
This conference day will conclude in an interactive plenary session that draws together the key information from the presentations from the day and summarizes the critical messages and lessons.

Let your hair down and have some fun and meet some new people at the informal Cocktail Reception and networking function.

9:00 a.m. Education– 'Nothing More Sustainable than Education'
Great Basin College conducted a series of Community Summits in early 2010. The Summit sessions included leadership stakeholders from Ely, Elko, Pahrump, and Winnemucca representing regional industries, municipal government, school districts and other educational organizations, and community social services organizations. Great Basin College will lead a discussion of the topics raised during those summit meetings and how they relate to other mining communities across the nation.
